The right retreat center makes a weekend feel effortless; the wrong one creates problems at every turn. Brochures and websites only tell part of the story, so call or visit and ask these questions before you sign anything.
Space and lodging
- How many people can you sleep, and in what kind of rooms? Cabins with bunks, motel-style rooms and private rooms suit very different groups.
- Are bathrooms in each room, or shared? This matters a great deal for older adults and families.
- Is the facility accessible? Ask about ramps, ground-floor rooms and walking distances.
- Will another group be on site the same weekend? Sharing space can affect quiet, meals and schedules.
Meeting and worship space
- Is there a room large enough for everyone to worship together? Ask for the seated capacity, not the standing one.
- Are there breakout rooms for small groups?
- What sound, projection and instruments are provided? If little is available, plan to bring portable AV.
- Is there a chapel or quiet place for prayer?
Meals
- Are meals included, and how are dietary needs handled? Ask for a sample menu and how they manage allergies.
- May we bring an outside caterer or cook our own food?
Policies and cost
- What does the price include? Lodging, meals, linens, meeting rooms, recreation and taxes can all be separate.
- What are the deposit, payment and cancellation terms? Know when your final headcount is due and what happens if numbers drop.
- What insurance and paperwork do you require? Many camps require a certificate of insurance and signed releases, especially for minors.
- Is the center's statement of faith or mission compatible with ours? Many Christian camps welcome any church; some have specific standards for groups.
- What recreation is available, and is it staffed? Waterfronts, ropes courses and trails often require certified staff.
Visit before you book
If at all possible, walk the grounds, see a sample room and eat a meal there. Ask a church that has used the center recently how the weekend went.
